Cloisonné / Hard Enamel
Jewellery and ornaments have been produced by the by the Chinese for over 5,000 years using Cloisonné it is said to preserve colours for up to a hundred years. The colours are made from Japanese mineral ore and ground into powder then the colour is added, the colour painted onto badges is then baked. Hard Enamel being a glass like material, Cloisonné pins last for a lifetime.
Cloisonné items such as lapel pins, stick-pins, cuff-links and tie-bars have become popular with collectors. Hard Enamel is the most expensive material as it has so many complex procedures, the most time consuming production and intense skills of the production staff.
Cloisonné can only use a handful of colours but Imitation Hard Enamel / Synthetic Cloisonné pins can have many hundreds of Pantone colours used in the making of the lapel pin or medal.
Hard enamel / Cloisonné pins are also cheaper and faster to make hence the popularity of the synthetic hard enamel over the last 30 years.

It is usually necessary to allow for a blank metal rim (0.3mm minimum).
If you require a full-piece colouring, a special printing process is necessary.
For those who prefer Pantone colours, synthetic / imitation hard enamel can be used instead. However, this is not as hard as real Hard Enamel but more shiny and clear in colour.
